This is Lightroom Mobile’s ace in the hole: Because the Discover feature is part of the same software used to edit the images being shared, it allows for a level of freedom unmatched by any other photosharing site. You can only see the final image, which isn’t much use if you want to know how the photographer edited their photo to actually create the picture. However, none of these-not Instagram, Flickr, SmugMug, or anything else-let you see the editing process. There are hundreds, even thousands, of photo communities online that let you view pictures and share your own. The Discover feature in Lightroom Mobile solves this by giving you access to a worldwide community of artists who have willingly shared their editing process. People can see the end result, but not the process. Yet, for photographers, this knowledge is often locked away behind a door. This is the foundation for almost any trade, craft, or artistic pursuit. Find out what works for photographers you admire and respect, and then adopt those techniques into your own workflow. One of the best ways to grow as a photographer is to learn from others. But, thanks to the recent addition of a ‘Share Your Edit’ feature in Lightroom Mobile, you’re now able to view the behind-the-scenes edits made to images. Unfortunately, such edits on a photo have been impossible to see. ![]() From simple cropping and white balance to in-depth editing like curves and color mix, these edits are what turn an ordinary image into a work of art. In nearly every case, the photo is the end result of dozens, even hundreds, of edits made by the photographer. Every time you see a photo that strikes you as beautiful, brilliant, or breathtaking, you are only witnessing the tip of the iceberg.

It is formed from portions of the frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, paired temporal, paired parietal, and occipital bones ( Fig 1). The skull base separates the intracranial and extracranial compartments. At our trauma center, in addition to obtaining CT images with 5-mm section thickness, we routinely obtain 0.625-mm thin-section images by using a bone algorithm with sagittal and coronal reformatted images for all trauma head CT protocols, thereby enhancing the depiction of complex skull base anatomy. In addition to obtaining directly acquired axial images, high-resolution multiplanar reformatted images, including those obtained in the coronal and sagittal planes, may be constructed from the axial dataset to increase sensitivity in the acute setting ( 2, 5). Obtaining thin-section images of 3 mm or less is recommended in the setting of trauma, as use of thick-section images has been found to miss a significant number of linear fractures and skull base lesions, particularly when the images are obtained in the horizontal plane ( 3, 4). Studies have shown the superiority of depicting findings on thinly collimated spiral CT images ( 2). An interpretation checklist to help improve diagnostic accuracy is provided.Īccording to the practice parameter for the performance of head CT developed by the American College of Radiology, the American Society of Neuroradiology, and the Society for Pediatric Radiology ( 1), contiguous or overlapping axial images should be acquired with a section thickness of no greater than 5 mm. We review the imaging characteristics of important “do not miss” lesions at the skull base on the basis of their anatomic location and manifestations. In this article, we review and illustrate the essential skull base anatomy and the common blind spots important to radiologists interpreting a nonenhanced head CT study in the acute setting. Delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, or lack of recognition of skull base conditions can negatively impact patient care, highlighting the importance of using a mental checklist when interpreting studies of the skull base, especially the first few images of the study. These neurologic manifestations are often referred to as red flags and include cranial nerve deficits, strokelike symptoms that are atypical for a specific vascular territory, and progressive and/or recurrent onset of symptoms. In addition, using a systematic search pattern and having an overall awareness of the neurologic manifestations of a skull base lesion can aid in increasing the diagnostic yield for the interpreting radiologist. Therefore, all radiologists working in the acute care setting must have a thorough knowledge of normal skull base anatomy at CT and the wide spectrum of disease that may manifest in this area. Skull base anatomy is complex, and pathologic conditions in this region can be subtle and easily overlooked. ![]() Routine head CT often includes images of portions of the skull base, extracranial spaces, and upper cervical spine. Non–contrast material–enhanced CT of the head is the primary imaging modality used to evaluate patients with neurologic deficits who present to the emergency department. ![]() The top two nations in each group advance. The benefit of a quick move in home is that there is not any build time to wait for – it’s ready to go! Each quick move in home is unique, featuring a variety of floorplans and design features. “We want to try to learn the craft and the local know-how and the local expertise in one place to really capture that and then to try to translate it to another.A Quick Move-In Home, or spec home, is a new construction home that we build to completion before it is purchased. “If we find techniques and materials that work in Rwanda, we want to see if we could scale those techniques in another country,” Karlsson says. The team hopes to help share local construction techniques between regions. (Better Shelter itself evolved early on, as the organization realized that the shelters were being used in more cramped settings than they’d been designed for, posing a fire hazard the designers had to reengineer materials and also work with partners to make sure that they were being deployed correctly.) It will continue to test and potentially tweak the design. Fifty units have been deployed in pilots so far, with 500 planned by the second quarter, and a goal of 10,000 by the end of the year. The nonprofit and its partners are now scaling up. The shelters can also be stored locally before a disaster happens, with 180 units packed into a shipping container. But Structure aims to be a helpful backup solution in an emergency where shelters are needed immediately. “Countries like Syria, Iraq, or Yemen.” In other areas, if local materials are readily available and people can quickly rebuild themselves, that’s ideal. “It works very well for a protracted crisis where you don’t have access to local materials,” says Karlsson. In some areas, the original Better Shelter may be a better fit. When upgraded with local materials, the structure is expected to last as long as 10 years. When the pandemic ends, the shelters can be disassembled, moved, and reused. In Tajikistan, a nonprofit planned to test the design for use as disaster shelters after a landslide but ended up using them for COVID-19 medical stations. In a pilot in the southern Indian state of Kerala, for example, a nonprofit partner built a small number of the homes after massive flooding. ![]() “And the investment that you make in a humanitarian response to save lives also can link into early recovery.”īetter Shelter began working with nonprofits in a handful of countries in 2020 to test the design. “You can stimulate the local economy,” he says. ![]() When local construction is possible, Karlsson says, it makes sense to support the purchase of those materials and create jobs rather than shipping in a fully finished home from donors. The shelter can be used immediately but later strengthened with local materials such as bamboo, sorghum, or twigs mixed with mud or clay. Because funding for humanitarian shelters is limited, the organization is running a campaign to ask donors to pledge a dollar a day for a year to sponsor a home. The new shelter, with a simple frame that can be covered with a tarp and eventually recovered with other materials, is nearly four times less costly, at $365. The original shelters, with sturdy panels to make up the walls and roof, a door, and the option of solar panels, are more expensive. The Ikea Foundation-backed nonprofit first launched flat-packed shelters in 2015 as Syrian refugees were fleeing to Europe. “We can ship in something that provides emergency relief, but then you can upgrade it locally,” says Johan Karlsson, managing director of Better Shelter, the organization making the shelter, called Structure. |
